We had tickets to catch a show at the Theatre Royal, so needed somewhere to eat that would be quick and delicious. Being a newbie to Hobart, thankfully friends we were visiting suggested we head to the Hope & Anchor - brilliant suggestion. This pub is the oldest licensed hotel in Australia ... so our lovely waitress told us ... and it was fabulous.  There are a variety of rooms over two stories of the hotel to eat in and we found ourselves up on the second floor.  The place is wonderfully quirky, filled with antiques and all sorts of bits and bobs to entertain the eye.  I popped my head into most of the rooms and the decore throughout was delightful.   Then there wa...

Restaurant at Hope & Anchor was on our Entertainment card, so thought it worthwhile to check out. Downstairs was full, so we sat in one of the upstairs rooms, themed with horns and stag heads. With a window open and slight breeze, it made for a great space to dine, with only one other table occupied. While they dithered over menu choices, we ordered quickly and did not have to wait too long for our mains. Mine was beef cheeks with red wine jus, mash, mixed greens & sweet potato chips on top. Lots of meat and greens, with just the right amount of jus. The meat was tender & tasty. My partner had a pork cutlet with apple on sweet potato mash and greens. A good sized serving and als...

On a recent trip to Hobart my partner and I had the pleasure of visiting Australia's 'oldest' pub which was luckily quite close to our hotel.  The Hope and Anchor is  a warm and welcoming old style pub with generous, good quality food.  My steak was cooked perfectly, the wine list was decent and the staff were friendly.  Live music on a Wednesday night was also a bonus.  I would eagerly recommend this place to anyone in Hobart after a decent, no-nonsense counter meal in a cosy setting. Bad service and not so friendly waiting staff. We came to the restaurants page and not by nobody at the front counter ten minutes recognized. Finally, we sat on the bar, with a much better atmosphere with live music. The slow boiled beef pasta was delicious, but not worth the tiny portion size and the expensive price. Disappointed that I have been waiting for such a small amount of food for 30 minutes, otherwise the food would have been 5/5. It's the first time that I still have a restaurant hungry.

Visit to Hobart I wanted to experience a meal in Australia's oldest licensed pub (1807). My calamari was ok ... Nothing to write home. But disappointed but disappointed that the bar has a Somersby apple wine on the tap and no local mug one. Bar can also get incredibly loud and hard around a table after 19 o'clock. The TV ruined it for me - a local musician played, but the TV (with footy) was behind her, a bit of an insult!

This may be a 1.0, but we will not stay long enough to actually order, so who knows how well the food is. What a shocking amateur rabble they were. To see how the.chaos mild was amusing until we were with our little boy, without being served or recognized for 30 minutes. Needles to say, we had to leave and get fish and chips from the harbor front.

Needed a quick lunch the other day so called in to the Hope & Anchor. They have several $10 meals which are great value. I went for the chicken burger which was really tasty and came with very crunchy chips. Not a bad range of beers and cider on tap. Free pool as well! Book a table now

A bit of your game today. Burger so burned, it is not edible. We really should not serve this, just cook another .. Everything else is ok. Nice environment.
