As an Indian woman whose favorite food is South Indian specialties, iddly/sambar/uttapam, this place hit the spot. I stuck with the basics and has a veg uttapam, idly, vada, and sambar. It came with the traditional accompaniments and everything was good. I’ve had better, but this is Kona and I’m happy to have a solid Indian option. I’ll go back and try other items. Excellent outdoor seating and ambiance at Ali’i Gardens. For those who say it’s too spicy, that’s the authenticity of that region’s palate. But if you can’t handle it, then order uttapam, idly, plain dosa, and vada. Skip the accompanying sambar and go easy on the chutneys.

Food truck serving South Indian food. Everything is very spicy- we asked if the spice level can be adjusted and they said it could not this cut the menu down to less than half of what we could order. Even the items not marked spicy are served with sauces, chutneys, and soup which is all very spicy. The prices are good for Kona $7-10 for an item, but each item is not very filling. Each order is just one dosa which is a thin Indian crepe/pancake. So for a meal, you will spend $14 or more per person. The owner is pleasant. The wait is also always quite long (sometimes 30 minutes or more after ordering).
We ordered Masala dosa at this restaurant. Unfortunately, the filling was burnt and the sambar was watery. We had to wait due to a long line as there were only two people working. The restaurant is located in a food court. The menu does not match what is actually served. I also ordered a Pepsi which turned out to be mostly water and didn't taste good. Several other diners left without finishing their meals. The tea we ordered was very weak, more like water. This is not a traditional South Indian restaurant, but they do offer mostly vegetarian options on their menu.
The owner described dosa as a South Indian savory crepe made from a fermented batter of black lentils and rice, served hot with chutney and sambar. I ordered the masala dosa, which was filled with delicious potatoes, onions, and a blend of South Indian spices. For a starter, I enjoyed the samosa - a fried dish with a savory filling of spiced potatoes and peas, presented in a unique triangular shape. I highly recommend giving Swami's Dosa a try. You will likely find yourself returning for more, just like I plan to do. Book a table now
Overpriced for the quantity and quality of food. We ordered a dosa, podi and tamarind rice, food was served on paper plates, missing cutlery and bill ran . Potatoes with tamarind rice and dosa was salty, podi was burnt and lacked salt and tamarind rice was basic. Either accept you are not a Michelin star cook and bring down the astronomical price of your food or hire a Michelin star chef and lease a proper sit down restaurant that fits the ambience.
Tastiest and most flavorful food you would find on the island. We’ve been coming here for a quite a while and the food never disappoints. We’ve tried a bunch of Dosas however, our favorite is the Mysore Dosa, which comes out perfect every time. I am not even vegetarian however this has been my go to place anytime I don’t feel like making food at home. Highly recommend, very flavorful and just delicious. Food is made fresh per order !
My husband and I dined at this restaurant on our final evening in Kona, and we were blown away! We ordered the masala dosa with sambar and it was absolutely delicious. If we return to the Big Island in the future, we will definitely come back here. It definitely deserves a 5-star rating! I must mention that despite this being a South Indian restaurant, the samosas were also amazing. I highly recommend this place!
Do not miss out on this delicious Indian food. We went in the evening when the truck is parked at the gas station. But the location does not reflect the quality of the food. We had dosa and some of the little savoury donuts (sorry I forget the name). Absolutely delicious. The little sides accompanying the dishes were great. Track this truck down! Book a table now
Wanted to have a quick dinner and found this Indian place. It’s in a good court and behind the building. The food was hot and good. Tasteful to have to it in this island. Dosa comes with sambhar, coconut and red (tomato) chutney.Vegetarian options: All dishes are vegetarian
