After a long day trip on a Saturday, we arrived back to our accommodation on Macquarie Street tired and just needed somewhere close to eat. We were glad that Astor Grill still had seats when we showed up without booking. This busy restaurant had a warm and welcoming vibe to it, with friendly and attentive staff.
As we didn’t feel like eating steaks on the night, we went for other proteins on the menu. We had two Entrée dishes, one Main dish and one Dessert to share.

Haven't been to the Astor Grill for about 8 years and was pleasantly surprised.Service was excellent. Very attentive. Atmosphere is a bit stodgy compared to most of the hip restaurants which have popped up in Hobart over the past few years, but if you're after a place where you can actually talk and hear one another and enjoy each other's company then this is it. Great for birthdays and intimate functions. Food couldn't really be faulted. Wine menu is extensive.Among us we had the crayfish (rock lobster) pate which was to die for, pan fried truffle mushrooms, steak tartare, pork belly, grilled octopus, salad of ancient grains, grilled wallaby fillets and eye fillet. No complaints there.
This must be the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Hobart. I am a regular - I like the pleasant surroundings. The food is excellent - one of the two top steak places in Hobart and treats for the fish eaters and desert lovers.. Good wine list with plenty of good value options. The staff are very friendly and patient and helpful with difficult dietary requirements. The service is top quality.
Open open - which is good in Hobart. Good escape from strong rain outside. The steak selection looks extensive (next time). A set of local fish dishes. The wine list appeared well, but limited by the glass. The service improved in the evening. Had a well presented Atlantic salmon and surprisingly good olives. Worth a second attempt.
Great service!! Never felt rushed, yet staff were attentive Water glad was never empty.
I ordered the the wallaby, which I've never tried.
